Closet Basics 101
This past week, there's been alot of serious, heated discussion
between my husband and I about being frugal and making cutbacks
on this and that, so we can move forward...
It got me thinking about my closet again.
I'm a great bargain hunter and I can find trendy pieces
for very little and still look fashionable.
But what if I had an empty closet
and only a few hundred dollars to start over?
What are the necessary basics?
Every day, life events happen to people
that cause them to need to start over.
Hurricanes, fires, unexpected moves, very dramatic weight gain or loss.
If you're a woman in her 20's or 30's, where would you begin
when it comes to your wardrobe?
Here's my guide to closet basics 101.
Everyday outfits:
-one black and one white tee -
-one black and one white tank top-
-one or two pair of jeans-
-one pair of denim or solid colored shorts-
-one black cardigan -
-one black belt -
Work and church:
-one basic black or grey pencil skirt-
-one button-down white oxford
-one black blazer
-black slacks
-khaki slacks
-a solid colored sundress
*Active wear:
-one pair of yoga pants
-one pair of bike shorts
-one sport bra
-one dri-fit tank or tee that can get sweaty
(so not the ones from your everyday collection)
On your feet:
-black, nude or metallic flats
-black or tan leather flip-flops
-black heels
-black boots
-running shoes
In your underwear drawer:
-One week of comfy cotton briefs, bikinis, boy shorts or whatever cut you feel best in...any color
-One nude pair for light colored pants or shorts
-one week of black cotton "period panties" just for your monthly period
-One thong for the tight-fitting yoga pants and shorts
-three or four bras that fit comfortably, any color
-one nude colored bra for white shirts
-one strapless bra for dresses
-a pack of white ankle socks
Bedtime:
-1-2 comfy tees
-1-2 comfy pair of lounge wear shorts/pajama pants
OR
-1-2 long cotton shirt-dresses
-1 pair of flannel pants and sweatshirt for cold nights
For cold weather:
-one tan, black or grey peacoat
-two v-neck pull-over sweaters to go over your tees
-one wooly scarf in a color that goes with the black and white in your wardrobe
-one lighter weight scarf for cool days
-one-two pair of woolly boot socks
-one woolly hat and matching gloves
*For the beach and pool:
-one black bikini bottom
-one black and one colorful bikini or tankini top (or a one-piece)
-one light-weight cover-up sundress
-basic rubber flip-flops, any color
*These items should come after you cover the other basics
This may seem like a lot, but if you stay focused and look for sales and specials at stores like
Target, Forever 21, Cotton-On, Plato's Closet, Ross, Marshall's, TJ Maxx and Old Navy,
you can easily cover all the bases for under $300.
Once you have all these items, you're good to go until you have more funds
for extras, colorful shirts and trendier pieces.
Wishing you well on your new chapter!
