How Amazon Prime Blesses Me and Curses Me at the Same Time...

How Amazon Prime can be a blessing and a curse

My life greatly simplified after my husband revealed

that I could have access to the prime account also.

At that point, I had a new baby.

I didn’t have all the time in the world to go bouncing

From store to store to find a special type of glue

Or a certain vitamin

Or items for baby-proofing the condo.

There was a time in the not-so-distant past

That I would have to do just that.

Saturday would roll around and I would go to Target

To try to find a certain household item.

Target would be sold out.

I would then go and try Home Depot.

Soon, half the day was gone looking for one item.

When it came to matters where there were more choices

Like buying a new pair of shoes

I could find myself bouncing from store to store

To the mall and back again

Just to find something that sort of had “that look”

For the right price.

Throughout my 20’s, it wasn’t uncommon

For my entire weekend to be spent driving to stores

Looking for certain things.

And then came Amazon Prime.

At first, I only thought to consult it

For things like vitamins and baby-proofing

But the longer I had it,

The more broad the spectrum became.

Before long, I was browsing the e-store on my phone

Looking at décor for my son’s room

Or a cheap but flattering basic dress.

Even items that I had been consulting other websites to order

Soon were replaced by Amazon.

It wasn’t that I wanted to sacrifice quality,

It’s just that sometimes clothes, shoes or various household commodities

Could get to me faster for less money

Than paying for them directly from a brand’s website,

Paying shipping,

And waiting more than a week.

Oh how I took delight in these Prime boxes that were turning up

earlier and earlier.

Some things were waiting for me on my doorstep

Just the very next day.

It shaved not only expenses,

but probably hours off my weekend chores list.

And more than once,

Amazon could get me a supplement I was out of

Much faster than if I had to wait

For a day that I could coordinate my free time

with the local health food store’s availability.

These are the ways it has blessed me.

How has it been a curse?

I may have spent less overall on many things

But in some ways I have spent more.

This is not a constant, just a case-by-case basis.

In the past, I would go looking for something

Usually fashion related

And after combing the mall,

I didn’t see the piece of clothing as I pictured it

for the right price.

I’d find things that were the wrong material,

Wrong size,

Wrong color,

Perfect but far too expensive...

And I would just move on to my next wish list item.

Because of Amazon, I can usually find said piece of clothing-

It is affordable and I order it.

Scenarios where I would have given up before,

I have triumphed at finding the thing

Thanks to Prime.

Also, it has taken away a little bit of business

from local sources.

This was nothing personal against mom and pop shops,

But their hours, availability and sometimes cost of

Certain things,

Like my herbal supplements or

the special organic tampons I needed,

just didn’t line up for me to buy them from the shop.

How has Amazon blessed or cursed you?
